Conveyor Examples - Nonwoven
Nonwovens were the first modern improvement in American style belting. Although a “nonwoven” belt sounds weak, the opposite is actually true. Almost all other belting is made of thin plies of reinforcing fabric. To get a thick belt you have to add multiple plies, with rubber or plastic in between. This adds weight and increases the horsepower required to drive the belt. Interwoven belting uses a single thick interwoven fabric ply, but it requires a lot of PVC elastomer to fill up the matrix. PVC is a heavy elastomer, so horsepower is still an issue.
Nonwovens use only a single ply of very strong fabric. To make the belt thick, a 3-D matrix of interlocking fibers is added. The benefit of interlocking fibrous bulk is that it takes a lot of energy to destroy a nonwoven belt. That means tear resistance, cut resistance, impact resistance and fastener holding above and beyond any other belting type. Why? Because the individual bulky fibers can give. They are wrapped around each other, but not connected. They are resilient and forgiving.
A forgiving nature also makes nonwoven belts track better than any other belt construction. Other belts do not have the capability to equalize the tensions exerted upon them. Nonwoven belts on the other hand, exhibit a slip-grip behavior, similar to a rip-stop nylon tent fabric.
Do you need another reason besides impact resistance, tear resistance, cut resistance fastener holding, and best-in-class tracking? Consider price. Made in America nonwovens are among the least expensive belts to purchase.
